Just read this quote by Mark Batterson, "we read the Bible like a map trying to figure out how to get where we want to go only to discover that its a mirror revealing who we are."
That is so insightful, especially in light of our series on James. It changes the way that I open God's Word. This morning I continued my reading of the The Daily Bible, I was impressed about how seriously God takes our obedience. I was also struck at how flippant I am with my own obedience. I am reading in Exodus 31, about honoring the Sabbath.
Exodus 31:15, Anyone who does work on the Sabbath must be put to death.
Now that is harsh, and I don't fully understand all that God was getting at. Here is what I wrote in my journal: Help me to understand the importance of honoring You and what is important to You.
When I am looking at the bible as a road map, passages like that derail me. But when I am looking at it as a mirror, I realize how far I have to go in honoring my God.
